Exceptionally good driving for such an unimpressive lap time.......

#45 Smokey Saturn and the Bandits (Saturn SL2, above) – This poor team suffers endlessly for their Saturn, but you can always count on them to bust out the least-convincing Smokey and the Bandit theme of all time.

The guy runing at 5:40 eastern is the quickest by 2 seconds a lap compared to the others. What’s interesting is that he’s the one not heel towing or speed shifting. Also, no tire noise.

I guess the lesson is you need to carry speed in these car. And the guy carrying speed looks desceptively slow.

Especially in a car with a flopy chassis/suspension smoothness counts for a lot in not unsettling the tires.

Agreed, the trick with FWD cars is carrying speed into the corner. Lighter braking, using rotation to scrub speed. I think heel toeing makes it harder to modulate while braking. Also I wonder if aggressively zinging the engine ends up over slowing the car.

BTW, figured out why the lap times didn’t make sense. We haven’t run the long track before. Subtract 15 seconds and this year’s times and they make sense compared to last year.....

You’re probably right, for amateur racers trying to brake smoothly and consistently while downshifting is a lot to manage lap after lap, corner after corner. Concentrating on doing less and doing it better could be faster.
